We stand in solidarity with our partner organisations and the people in Mozambique

Afrikagrupperna stands in solidarity with the Mozambican people in their demands for electoral justice and the right to protest. We call for a peaceful resolution and an immediate end to the violence and restrictions on freedom of movement, free speech and expression. The Government’s arbitrary restrictions on internet access violate human rights and should be lifted immediately.

Both leading up to the election and after FRELIMO’s declared election victory, civil society, international observers and the opposition have reported numerous irregularities in connection with the election. In response, thousands of citizens have participated in demonstrations in various parts of the country, most in the capital Maputo. Civil society organisations report severe human rights violations, as protests have been met with brutal force from both the military and police. So far, at least 34 deaths have been reported.

Although many saw this year’s election as an opportunity for a positive change for the country, it has now become one of the worst, marked by violence, torture, and increased militarization.

On October 19, two opposition members were murdered, including a legal advisor to one of the presidential candidates. The situation in Mozambique is deteriorating daily. Police are unlawfully arresting demonstrators and using violence against both young people and children. At the same time, the Mozambican people have united, and the protests are spreading across all social classes and age groups.

Afrikagrupperna calls for international solidarity and demands an immediate end to state violence and repression, as well as accountability for the excessive use of force by the police and military. The election results must reflect the will of the people and their constitutional rights. Freedom of speech and peaceful protests must be respected.

A luta continua!
