Lunch seminar: Climate Justice, Extractives and Gender-based Violence

The climate negotiations COP27 are ongoing in Egypt. Decision-makers, state representatives and lobbyists are found at the table. But those worst affected by climate change are barely represented. They are far from the corridors of power and their voices are rarely heard, even though they are crucial to overcoming the problems we face.

On Wednesday 16th, at Solidaritetshuset in Stockholm, we welcome Winnet Shamuyarira, Extractives, Militarisation and Violence Against Women Coordinator at Afrikagruppernas partner organisation WoMin.

WoMin is a Pan-African ecofeminist alliance that support women’s organising and challenge the destructive large-scale extraction of natural resources and propose developmental alternatives. Winnet’s work focuses on women’s bodily autonomy and interrogating power and patriarchy’s impact on women’s sexual and reproductive rights. During this seminar Winnet will share African women’s perspectives on climate justice and the demands that came out of the alternative climate conference Women’s Climate Assembly that was held in Nigeria ahead of COP27. She will talk about the violence women face daily in communities affected by the extractive projects that are causing the climate change challenge.

The link between these types of projects and the Swedish National Income Pension System will be highlighted. The seminar will be held in English. Entrance is free and lunch included.

RSVP no later than noon Tuesday 15 November.

Warm welcome!
