Poem from Albert Nyathi, a leading Zimbabwean poet and mucisian

Hopping Against Hope (in Zimbabwe)

We have been hopping and hoping

Hopping hopelessly

Hopping helplessly

Hopping against hope

Hopping like grasshoppers,

Hopping and groping in the dark

Hoping things would work out

Some day,

To date, we are still here

Hopping and hoping

Hoping things would still work out

Some day,

I suppose we should keep on

Hopping and hoping,

With time, some day

Things will work out,

Because in isiNdebele the elders say:

Ithemba kalibulali. (Never give up)
