Seminar and report launch: Human rights defenders under attack – what role for business?
december 12 @ 08:30 - 10:00Gratis
Human rights defenders play a key role in holding companies and states accountable in cases of corporate misconduct and business-related rights violations. But they face growing threats, harassment and even deadlyviolence across the globe when they challenge business activities that negatively impact human rights and the environment. The situation is particularly acute in high-risk sectors such as agribusiness, mining and ICT.
Welcome to a breakfast seminar where you will hear defenders, companies and decision-makers discuss ways to address this alarming situation, with a special focus on the role of business in mitigating risks and promoting an open society.
At the seminar, Swedwatch will also present findings from a new report which portrays the situation of defenders in different countries and reviews how some of the largest companies in the EU are addressing this issue.
In the panel:
Nonhle Mbuthuma, South African defender and founder of the Amadiba Crisis Committee, uniting community members in the Amadiba Tribal Authority region who oppose destructive mining projects.
Ryan Mendoza has worked for several church-based organisations in Mindanao, the Philippines, promoting human rights and the right to health for indigenous peoples. He has lived in exile in Europe since 2018.
Åsa Eriksson (S), Member of Parliament, Committee on Industry and Trade. Board member of Initiativ Kambodja, an association working for democracy and respect for human rights in Cambodia.
